A Plane Ticket that Changed Everything

Hey WTFers, WTFbuddies, WTFaneers, WTFniks people who have been on board since before WTF, all of you –

Well, Toronto was great. I hadn’t been there in ten years. If you listen to this week’s show you’ll know that I have some fond and some not so fond memories related to the last time I was there. It involves a passionate affair and a plane ticket that changed everything–including the locks on my apartment.

Thanks to all of you that came out and thanks for the presents–books, Yam bread, fresh tapped Maple syrup, cat toys, CDs and a little WTF Marc Maron paper doll thingy. I had a great time, you were great crowds and Yuk Yuks is an amazing club.

Now, onto Ireland. I haven’t been to the festival in Kilkenny in about ten years. The last time I was there I was newly sober which I think is against the law there. Now, I am very sober. We’ll see if they let me into the country. I remember it being a beautiful place, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I think there is a castle there as well–which I may try to move into. It would be so much nobler to do the podcast from a keep surrounded by a moat than in the garage. Though, I love the garage. We’ll see how it goes. I hope there are enough WTFuckers there to help me take and hold the castle.

This week’s shows are great. The live one from UCB was a treat because I have known Laura Kightlinger forever and I haven’t seen or talked to her in years and she is truly one of the funniest people alive. Dylan Brody disappeared from my life for years as well. He was never really in it but I knew who he was. Funny and smart guy.

Enjoy.

The Purple Onion and Pristine Decay

May 17, 2010 by poprockcandy · Leave a Comment

wtf_banner.jpg

Hey WTFers, WTFbuddies, WTFaneers, people who have been on board since before WTF, all of you –

Holy shit! The Purple Onion shows in San Francisco last week were amazing. Sorry if you couldn’t make it. The place has such an awesome history–Lenny Bruce, Pryor, Woody Allen, Mort Sahl, The Smothers Brothers and Phyllis Diller all performed there in the club’s heyday. I found the history a little intimidating. I was happy to be in such a comedically haunted room, but it was a lot of pressure in my mind. So, I just thought how incredible it was that all those great performers had to have had at least one or two shitty sets there. Then I was comfortable.

The other interesting thing about The Purple Onion that the owner, Mario, was telling me is how the club is still in the exact same condition that it was in the ’50s and ’60s. I commended him on respecting the history of the club. But it isn’t really about respect per se. He went on to tell me that he hasn’t really fixed or replaced anything–ever. Because of the club’s landmark status, if he keeps it pristine in its decay–it can remain the way it is. It’s about money. If he fixes anything he has to update the entire club. He pointed out that there is no handicap ramp. The club is in a basement. He said when someone in a wheelchair shows up, they go old school–get a couple of guys and carry them down. So, I guess if you are wheelchair bound and come to a show at The Purple Onion, you get two old-timey treats–the original club and a frightening journey down a steep staircase.

BTW. Hey, Toronto–see you next weekend. (All others TBA)

Jim Norton- Episode 73

jim_norton_banner1.jpg

I have known Jim Norton for years. He is honest, filthy, unique, and hilarious. I wanted him to be all those things and he was. Enjoy. Topics include: being peed on, whores, transvestites, parents, being liberal, censorship, etc. Good stuff. Gritty and real and funny.

Tracy McMillan

tracy_mcmillan_banner.jpg

Tracy McMillan is someone I kind of knew from friends we have in common. When her book came out, I Love you and I’m Leaving You Anyway, I had to have her on. It is a memoir about having a father who was a pimp and spent most of his life in jail and a mother who was a whore. Tracy grew up in foster homes. The book is funny and revealing and gets to the heart of a lot of relationship dynamics that we can all relate to.
